Aesthetic, creative solution

Brief: Create a light-filled living space to accommodate a growing family. Make the native garden blend seamlessly as part of the house.

Overview

The owners of the Duffy Cedar House own a garden design & landscaping business and had developed and nurtured an innovative, predominantly native garden.

They wanted that garden to be central to – and influence – the home’s extension, using finishes that fit sympathetically with the garden.

From outside, the exciting contrast between the existing home and the new extension is visible. The extension has high ceilings which draw the eye through the windows flush with the ceiling to the garden’s canopy beyond. The end result is a simple, well-proportioned, well-built extension.

Features

  • Cedar cladding for an earthy aesthetic, sympathetic to the extensive garden
  • Double-glazed windows and doors to bring light into the home
  • Aluminium frame to the glazing contrasting sharply to the warm cedar cladding
  • Materials of the new extension match the existing house to create a seamless internal extension
  • Insulation to the shell of existing house and extension including underfloor, ceiling and cavity wall to maximise the thermal efficiencies
